JMU defensive end Sahir West gains national freshman honor

JMU DE West named Freshman All-American

James Madison defensive end Sahir West was recognized as a first-team Freshman All-American from The Athletic.

West, voted the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and a second-team All-Sun Belt selection, is fresh off his best game of 2025 to lead JMU to a win for the conference championship. The Baltimore native has started all 13 games this season at defensive end after redshirting a season ago.

He has made 43 tackles, with team bests of 14 tackles for loss and seven sacks while also contributing a forced fumble and four pass breakups. Against Troy in the title game, he made career highs of 10 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble that resulted in a JMU touchdown.

Apprentice goes 2-2 in dual tourney

Apprentice School finished 2-2 at the Cougar Duals Saturday in Danville, defeating Davis & Elkins 41-14 and Ferrum 39-12 in the event in Averett’s arena.

The Builders lost on a tiebreaker to Belmont Abbey after a 21-21 standoff, with Apprentice being outscored 62-58 in points in individual bouts, and also fell 43-88 to Averett’s Gold team.

Logan Eastman beat three of his four opponents in Apprentice’s first duals of the season. Lucas Vannostrand and Landon Yoder were the only Builders to beat Averett foes.

COLLEGE MEN’S GYMNASTICS

W&M’s Wilkins wins CGA All-Star title on parallel bars

William & Mary standout Evan Wilkins won the parallel bars title during the fourth annual College Gymnastics Association All-Star competition, which was held virtually on Sunday afternoon.

Wilkins, who was competing as a member of the East team, claimed the title with a 9.875 en route to helping his squad defeat the West team 231.6-231.275.

An All-Eastern College Athletic Conference honoree on floor last season after placing third in the event, Wilkins also competed in the finals in multiple events at the 2025 NCAA Championships, tying for 19th on floor (13.466) and tying for 27th on parallel bars (13.033).
