Police are investigating after an armed security guard fired a gun at an elementary school in Torrington on Tuesday before school had started for the day.
Officers responded to Torrington Elementary School on the report that a gun had gone off in the school and found that no one had been shot, according to the Torrington Police Department.
Police said no students had arrived for school yet when the shot was fired. They did not immediately release additional information about the circumstances that led to the gun going off.
According to police, administrators and the police department each agreed that school would go on as normal, believing there was no danger to the students.
Police said the security guard who was involved has been cooperative with the investigation.
“The incident is currently under investigation,” police wrote in a statement. “No further comments will be made by police regarding the open investigation.”
According to police, the department and school administrators have been in “constant communication” with each other and each takes “student and staff safety very seriously.”
