Portions of the Poquoson River will be closed to shellfish harvesting for at least several weeks starting Wednesday due to water quality concerns following the release of untreated sewage, according to a release from the Virginia Department of Health.
The closure applies to the majority of the Poquoson River in both York County and the City of Poquoson, but specifically the areas upstream from longitude map coordinates (37°11’35.1″,-76°23’25.3″) and (37°10’13.4″,-76°21’01.3″), according to the Virginia Department of Health. The affected portions of the river will remain closed for 21 days after repairs are completed, in keeping with National Shellfish Sanitation Program regulations.

Only bivalve mollusks like oysters and clams are considered unacceptable for consumption due to the sewage, not crabs or finfish. Bivalve mollusks aren’t safe to consume because they may concentrate bacteria and viruses from the water and they’re typically eaten raw, according to the VDH website.
It’s unclear how the sewage was released into the water. A VDH spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday evening.
