Old Dominion has hired Michael Smith as its wide receivers coach, according to FootballScoop.com.
Smith spent the past two seasons as McNeese State’s wide receivers coach.
The New Orleans native has more than 25 years of college coaching experience, including time at South Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas, Rice and Kansas State.
As a player at Kansas State, Smith was one of the Big Eight’s all-time great receivers. He finished his playing career as the conference’s second-leading receiver with 179 receptions and was a two-time All-American.
UVA lands RB, DB commits
Middle Tennessee running back Jekail Middlebrook has committed to Virginia, according to CBS Sports and 247 Sports.
The 5-10, 196-pound Fayetteville, Georgia, native rushed for 752 yards and four touchdowns and caught 40 passes for 412 yards and three more scores this season. He averaged 5.4 yards a carry and 10.3 a catch.
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech defensive back Christian Ellis has committed to UVA, he announced Sunday on social media.
The 6-0, 202-pound safety from Jacksonville, Florida, had only seven tackles in four games for the Hokies this season, but collected 99 tackles for New Mexico in the 2024 season and 58 tackles in 2023.
Virginia offensive line coach Terry Heffernan is departing to become Stanford’s offensive coordinator, The Daily Progress reported Sunday. He’s been with the Cavaliers since 2023.
Virginia quarterback Danny Kaelin has entered the transfer portal, according to On3 Sports. He passed for 339 yards and a touchdown in seven games this season.
Virginia defensive end Fisher Camac will return to the Cavaliers next season, the program announced Sunday. The 6-7, 248-pound Gilbert, Arizona, native collected 45 tackles, including 6.5 for losses, and added 4.5 sacks and a fumble recovery this season.
Liberty hires VT’s defensive coordinator
Shawn Quinn, a seasoned veteran on the defensive side of the field, has been named Liberty’s new defensive coordinator.
Quinn joins the Flames’ coaching staff following four seasons at Virginia Tech, where he also coached linebackers and defensive backs. His nearly three-decade coaching career includes stops at LSU, Tennessee, Georgia Southern and Louisiana, plus three seasons as the head coach at Savannah State.
Quinn has coached in six bowl games, and he has worked with NFL standouts like 11-time Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten.
