HAMPTON — Two people died and four people, including a firefighter, are injured following a fire in the 90 block of West County Street, according to Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue.
Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue received a call for a multi-alarm residential structure fire and units arrived at about 5:58 p.m. on Wednesday. The structure is a multi-family unit and is near Hampton University.
When crews arrived, smoke and flames were visible from outside and two people had evacuated on their own, with injuries. They were given medical care immediately.
Crews went inside to search for people, as bystanders told them there were still people trapped inside. Crews found and rescued one person in the home and helped another out of the structure.
Five people were taken to the hospital, where two people died from their injuries. The other three are being treated for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. A firefighter has minor injuries after falling through the roof, but he was able to free himself, with his crew. A mayday call was issued, and then terminated for the firefighter.
This incident remains under investigation by the Hampton Fire Marshal’s Office.
