3 HU athletes win at Liberty Open
Three Hampton University athletes won their events at the 37-team Liberty Open in Lynchburg, among 12 Pirates finishing in the top three.
Kylee King won the women’s 800 meters in a season-best 2:12.73. Nia Warren won the women’s 1000 in a personal- best 2:52.42, and Marquis White won the men’s long jump with a season-best leap of 7.30 meters (23 feet, 11.5 inches).

VWU goes 3-1 at home invitational
Virginia Wesleyan (3-2) won three of four matches in its invitational tournament at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach.
Friday, the Marlins went 2-0, defeating Shenandoah 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-14) and Geneva of Pennsylvania 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21).Against Shenandoah, JaMarhe Wills had 15 kills, while Ajaye Davis had 32 assists. Versus Geneva, Siah Hall had nine kills, three aces and 11 digs.
Saturday, VWU split a pair of matches. The Marlins defeated Wilkes 3-1 (25-17, 25-12, 22-25, 25-18) but lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-14) to Wisconsin Lutheran.
Against Wilkes, Wills had 21 kills, three aces and 10 digs, while Davis had 47 assists.

No. 24 Stanford grapples to win vs. UVA
No. 24 Stanford (4-8, 2-2 ACC) earned a 31-9 victory over Virginia (8-6, 0-3) in Charlottesville. Nick Hamilton (174 pounds) and Brenan Morgan (285) won to pull the Cavaliers to 13-9, but the Cardinal won the last five bouts.

ODU teams defeat American, set pool records
Both Old Dominion teams earned victories over American, setting three facility records in the Monarchs’ JC “Scrap” Chandler Pool.The women’s 200-yard medley relay of Addie Elliott, Adrienne Rinker, Emma Seidel and Bella Pachek won the opening event with a pool-record time of 1:44.16.
Addie Elliott gave ODU its second record of the day, a 55.41 in the 100 backstroke. Grey Bremer earned a pool-record of 4:29.80 in the 500 freestyle.
The ODU men’s Bryce Mortimer, Daawson Truong and Zachary Redding won a pair of events apiece.

ODU beats North Alabama on Kickoff Weekend
Old Dominion (2-2) beat North Alabama 4-1 Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, in Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend consolation play.
Bouncing back from Friday’s defeat to Purdue, the Monarchs lost two of three doubles sets to fall behind 1-0 but swept the bottom four singles matches, thanks to Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan, Aryan Saleh, Piet Steveker and Felix Obermair.
No. 2 UVA qualifies for national indoors
In another Kickoff Weekend match, Virginia, ranked second nationally, shut out Michigan 4-0 at Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville to advance to the 16-team ITA national indoor championships. That event starts Feb. 13 in Dallas and Waco, Texas.
Dylan Dietrich, Jangjun Kim and Mans Dahlberg won at Nos. 1, 4 and 5, respectively, after the Cavaliers took a pair of doubles sets.
Virginia Tech also was part of the Kickoff Weekend, losing 4-0 to top-ranked Wake Forest and then 4-0 to North Carolina in Winston-Salem.

Tribe open with loss at West Chester
William & Mary opened its season with a 192.225-190.475 setback at West Chester in Pennsylvania.
Freshman Sophia Summers highlighted the Tribe’s individual performances and won the beam title in her collegiate debut with a 9.775.
Hannah Burke achieved a pair of top-three performances, as she placed second on vault (9.675) and tied for third on floor with Summer Penzi (9.650).

W&M’s Tully, Fu win events at Navy Open
William & Mary placed third at the Navy Open in Annapolis, Maryland. The Midshipmen claimed the team title with a 309.3 and were followed by Springfield (302.8) and W&M (291.35).
Luke Tully highlighted W&M’s individual performances with a trio of top-three finishes. He tied for first on floor (13.55), tied for second on vault (13.9) and placed third on tthe high bar (13.15). He was also the meet’s lone all-arounder and totaled a 76.15.
Led by Mark Fu’s winning score of 13.0 on parallel bars, Tribe gymnasts swept the top three spots in the event. Freshmen Nicholas Kosarikov (12.85) and Brayden Bates (12.8) also medaled.
Ricky Pizem came up big on high bar and finished second with a 13.2.

UVA coach captures milestone victory
Sara O’Leary earned her 200th victory as Virginia’s coach as the 14th-ranked Cavaliers (5-1) defeated No. 20 Southern California 4-0 at Boar’s Head Sports Club to qualify for the 16-team ITA national team indoors, which will start Feb. 6 on the courts of Northwestern and Illinois.
UVA won 6-1 on doubles lines 1 and 2 to move ahead 1-0. Kaitlyn Rolls and Isabelle Lacy won in straight sets at Nos. 6 and 4 singles, respectively, before Vivian Yang, UVA’s No. 1 player, defeated Emma Charney 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 for the clinching victory.

Hampton University’s women’s basketball home game against Elon, scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, was postponed to noon Monday because of the storm forecast. … James Madison’s women’s basketball game at Sun Belt-leading Arkansas State was postponed indefinitely because Winter Storm Fern was causing problems in the Red Wolves’ arena in Jonesboro. … Salisbury’s men’s basketball game against Regent, scheduled for Gateway Christian’s gym, was postponed because of the storm forecast.
