It took a first-place team to end the Hampton University men’s home winning streak at 11 games.
Greedy Williams had 19 points and seven assists as UNC Wilmington won 75-67 Saturday before 852 at the HU Convocation Center. The defeat ended the longest home winning streak in the Coastal Athletic Association.
The Seahawks (18-3, 7-1) bounced back from Thursday’s loss at William & Mary to maintain sole possession of first place in the CAA by a game over the College of Charleston. Patrick Wessler, one of the league’s top big men, had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Nolan Hodge added 13 points.
Daniel Johnson led the Pirates (10-11, 4-4) with 17 points. Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt added 14 points and six assists, and Josh Ogundele also scored 11. UNCW was 19 of 27 at the free-throw line, while Hampton was 5 of 8.
The first half was close throughout, with UNCW ahead 38-37 at the break. The Seahawks led throughout the second half, using a 7-0 run for a 60-52 edge with 8:01 to go. Hampton never threatened again.
The Pirates will return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday at Drexel.
Rhode Island 74, George Mason 65: Sophomore Jahmere Tripp scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds as URI (12-8, 3-4) handed the Patriots (18-2, 6-1) their first Atlantic 10 loss. The result in Kingston, Rhode Island, left Saint Louis alone atop the conference.
Tyler Cochran had 20 points and Jonah Hinton 13 for the Rams.
For George Mason, Kory Mincy scored 19 and Jahari Long 11. But the Patriots’ last lead was at halftime, 33-32. URI opened the second half on an 8-0 run for a 40-33 edge. George Mason pulled to within one but never could overtake the Rams.
VCU 75, Davidson 69: Lazar Djokovic’s 20 points and eight rebounds helped the Rams (14-6, 5-2) win in North Carolina and climb into a third-place tie in the Atlantic 10 with Dayton. Terrence Hill Jr. scored 14 points and Brandon Jennings 13 for VCU.
Sam Brown led the Wildcats (12-7, 4-3) with 18 points. Josh Scovens added 15 points and two steals.
Djokovic put up 10 points in the first half for the Rams, who led 37-31 at halftime. An 8-2 run pulled the Wildcats within 70-69, but two Michael Belle free throws made it 72-69. Jennings then sandwiched 3-of-4 free-throw shooting around a steal to close the deal.
George Washington 85, Richmond 69: The Revolutionaries (13-7, 4-3 Atlantic 10) went ahead 6-0 and 15-3 at home and stayed in front against the Spiders (13-8, 3-5), ending a two-game skid. UR has lost three consecutive games.
GW hit 15 of 33 from 3-point range. Five Revs scored in double digits, led by Tre Dinkins with 16 points. He, Garrett Johnson and Christian Jones each sank four 3s.
For the Spiders, AJ Lopez had 15 points, Aiden Argabright 14 and Will Johnston 11. Mike Walz added nine points and 14 rebounds.
Liberty 67, Delaware 51: Brett Decker Jr. netted 25 points in Lynchburg as the Flames (17-3, 9-0) continued their Conference USA domination, winning their 11th consecutive game overall. Decker was 6 of 12 from 3-point range, and JJ Harper joined him in double figures with 10 points.
Christian Bliss had 17 points and six rebounds for the Blue Hens (5-14, 1-7). Justyn Fernandez had 16 points and five rebounds but eight turnovers.
James Madison 82, Texas State 57: Justin McBride and Cliff Davis scored 18 points each as the Dukes (10-11, 3-6 Sun Belt) ended a three-game losing streak with authority, breezing past the Bobcats (11-11, 4-6) in Harrisonburg.
Bradley Douglas had 13 points and five assists for JMU, which shot 53% (30 of 57), including 14 of 32 from 3-point range. From behind the arc, McBride was 3 for 3 and Davis 6 of 9.
Mark Drone scored 17 and DJ Hall 14 for Texas State.
Western Carolina 88, VMI 58: The Catamounts (7-12, 3-5) rolled in Cullowhee, North Carolina, ensuring that the Keydets (6-15, 1-7) would stay alone in the Southern Conference basement. Marcus Kell’s 18 points and Cord Stansberry’s 17 points and five assists paced WCU.
Former Menchville High standout AJ Clark led VMI with 17 points, while Tan Yildizoglu had 13.
Navy 84, Army 56: Austin Benigni had 19 points and six assists as the host Midshipmen (15-6, 7-1) shot 58%, beat their fiercest rival and stayed alone atop the Patriot League.
Also for Navy, Mike Woods scored 17 and Aidan Kehoe had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cam Cole had 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Ryan Curry scored 15 and Jaxson Bell 14 for the Black Knights (8-13, 2-6).
Late Friday
High Point 93, Radford 83: Terry Anderson’s 31 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals sparked the Panthers (18-4, 6-1 Big South) to a road victory. Braden Hausen scored 17 points while going 5 for 8 from 3-point range.
The Highlanders (11-11, 4-3) were led by Del Jones, who finished with 23 points and four assists. Dennis Parker Jr. added 19 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Longwood 81, Charleston Southern 79, OT: Elijah Tucker scored 21 points and Jaylen Benard made a go-ahead layup with 10.1 seconds left in overtime for the Lancers (12-10, 4-3 Big South) in Farmsville.
Tucker also had nine rebounds and three steals, and Johan Nziemi had 17 points and four steals.
The Buccaneers (11-11, 2-5) were led by A’lahn Sumler, who posted 30 points, nine assists and three steals. James Madison transfer Brycen Blaine added 20 points and nine rebounds.
