A portion of the Virginia Capital Trail has been reopened following bridge improvements.
A segment of the trail, along mile markers 3 and 4 of its Jamestown leg, reopened on Jan. 15 after receiving a deck replacement, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. During its 1.5-week closure, new composite decking boards with added texture were installed to improve the bridge’s friction between the John Tyler Highway and Heritage Landing Road access points.
The 52-mile shared use trail connects Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond along Route 5. The new decking was created to provide pedestrians and cyclists a surface to safely walk and ride their bikes, as well as to extend the life of the bridge deck.
