The two-week stretch between former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah announcing he was going to enter the transfer portal and his eventual enrollment at Miami involved both a public debate on how the transfer portal and NIL should work as well as a legal battle between the quarterback and his former school.
After signing with the Hurricanes earlier in the week, Mensah gave his first interview to On3, and he credited Miami’s coaches and their success with quarterbacks the last two years as a main reason why he left Duke to go to UM.
“Miami is going to take me to the place I want to go, which is ultimately the NFL,” Mensah told On3. “They’ve got NFL coaches. Coach (Shannon) Dawson, what he does with quarterbacks. His track record is pretty amazing, and it’s something I wanted to be a part of. The way coach (Mario) Cristobal protects the quarterback, he’s always going to have a solid O-line and then the weapons just all around the team and everyone that’s a part of Miami. Seemed like it was a great fit for me.”
Mensah said watching Cam Ward’s success in 2024 and Carson Beck’s success last season was a big reason why he left for the Hurricanes. Ward pulled out of the NFL draft so he could transfer to Miami, and after one season at UM, he was the first pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Beck also backed out of the draft to transfer to the Hurricanes. Although he will not be taken first in the draft, he did rebuild his draft stock after suffering an elbow injury at Georgia and leading UM to the title game.
“I want to make the NFL,” Mensah further explained to On3. “I want to be a first-round draft pick. And all signs point towards Miami. Miami’s done it. If you watch what they do, they win. It’s just something I wanted to be a part of. I’ve always bet on myself, and I always will. I’ve done it once, and I’ll do it again. I want to be one of the best.”
Mensah said he wants to blend Ward’s and Beck’s styles at Miami.
The Hurricanes return many of the key skill players from the 2025 national runner-up team, including star wide receiver Malachi Toney and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. Miami added a pair of transfer wide receivers, Vandrevius Jacobs and Cam Vaughn, earlier in the offseason and signed Mensah’s favorite target at Duke, Cooper Barkate, the same day as Mensah.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been in an offense that’s going to be as talented as this one,” Mensah said. “The opportunities are endless, the sky’s the limit. I really just can’t wait to get to work with these boys, because it’d be a waste not to do something special with all the talent that we have.”
