Texas State men dominate ODU, which falls to 7-16

Old Dominion’s men were flying back home earlier than planned from Texas, but it probably wasn’t too pleasant a flight.

Despite KC Shaw’s 20 points and Jordan Battle’s 16, ODU lost 81-64 Saturday at Texas State in a game whose time was moved up by three hours (to 2 p.m. Eastern) to help the Monarchs hopefully get back home before too many effects of Winter Storm Gianna.

The Monarchs (7-16, 4-7 Sun Belt) never led in San Marcos. They shot just 33% (20 of 61) from the field, including 6 of 27 from 3-point range, and committed 14 turnovers.

Meanwhile, DJ Hall had 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals while shooting 7 of 8 from the floor for the Bobcats (13-11, 6-6). They hit 46% (27 of 59), including 7 of 16 from beyond the arc. Mark Drone had 12 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals, and Franck Emmou added 12 points.

A 7-0 burst gave Texas State a 17-6 advantage, and the Monarchs never got too close. Leading 42-35, the Bobcats ran off 13 straight points for a 55-35 lead with 15:44 to go. The margin remained in double figures after that.

ODU will try to bounce back at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Chartway Arena against Louisiana Monroe.
