Jason Miyares is no longer Virginia’s attorney general, but he’s still fighting Democrats’ efforts to redraw the state’s congressional districts.
“Two-thirds of Virginia voters agree politicians shouldn’t be doing this,” Miyares said at a news conference Friday afternoon. “And I think it’s got to be noted that what we have right now is a power grab in which they’re ignoring the will of voters.”
Democrats in Virginia’s General Assembly are moving forward with a plan to redraw the state’s congressional maps in order to give Democrats more seats in Congress. Currently, the state’s congressional delegation has six Democrats and five Republicans.
Democrats say their partisan redistricting is a temporary move in order to counter congressional redistricting in Republican-led states at the behest of President Donald Trump.
If Democrats persevere past the logistical obstacles in their way, a referendum could go to voters in April in which Virginians will decide if they want to allow Democrats to redraw the map to help them win control of Congress.
Miyares, who lost his reelection bid to Democrat Jay Jones in November, is now co-chairing the group Virginians for Fair Maps, alongside former Republican Congressman Eric Cantor.
Majority of Virginians support current redistricting method, CNU poll says
As a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served from 2016 to 2021, Miyares supported the state legislature’s work to set up a bipartisan redistricting commission. In 2020, Virginians voted to establish a bipartisan redistricting process. The process faced deadlocks, and ultimately, the Virginia Supreme Court created new maps in 2021 that are used today.
Miyares on Friday noted that the redistricting legislation likely will be the first bill that newly elected Gov. Abigail Spanberger will sign into law.
“Abigail Spanberger and the Democrats ran on a promise of affordability,” Miyares said. “The very first bill that Abigail Spanberger is going to sign … has nothing to do with affordability. It has everything to do with a power grab by politicians who don’t trust voters.”
Miyares said he will work to defeat the redistricting push “by any means necessary.”
