A man was sprayed with a fire extinguisher during an armed home invasion in his New Haven apartment late Tuesday.
Police responded to the apartment in the 100 block of Fitch Street at 11:14 p.m. on a report of a carjacking that was later found to be a home invasion, according to the New Haven Police Department.
The man told officers two males entered his unlocked apartment and sprayed him with a fire extinguisher, according to police. They then allegedly demanded he empty his pockets and fled the area in the victim’s vehicle, police said.
The man was not injured.
According to police, one of the intruders, wearing a ski mask and a black hooded sweatshirt, was allegedly armed with a handgun. The other individual, described as heavy-set, allegedly had a fire extinguisher with him, police said. Both individuals were described as standing between 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 5 feet, 10 inches tall.
Police said they found the man’s vehicle in the Fair Haven section of the city with assistance from the Real Time Crime Center. Officers tried to conduct a motor vehicle stop, but the driver allegedly took off.
Investigators later found the vehicle abandoned, according to police.
The incident remains under investigation.
