A “warming trend” is in order for South Florida after some parts of the region saw the coldest daily record lows in more than a century and thousands of cold-stunned iguanas were collected.
While the region’s most recent cold front is expected to keep temps rather chilly on Saturday with lows in the 40s and highs in the 70s, the weather will start to warm after the weekend.
High pressure will make it so temperatures cannot fall as drastically, which “will create a dry and tranquil period,” the National Weather Service Miami wrote.
By the second half of next week, some spots inland could see high temperatures hitting the 80s, said Sammy Hadi, a weather service meteorologist in Miami.
“As we continue to go through the rest of the week with high pressure overhead, we’re going to be continuing to increase a few degrees every day,” Hadi said.
Overnight lows “will still remain a bit chilly,” according to the weather service, hovering around the upper 50s in most areas.
The cold weather is due in large part to the dry air, which has thrust South Florida into a moderate to severe drought, with the Everglades in an extreme drought, Hadi said. This trend is likely to persist until May when the region’s wet season begins.
And more cold fronts could be on the horizon, with cooldowns possible for the next two months.
“We can still get significant cold fronts historically into March,” Hadi said.
