Extreme cold, frigid wind gusts may make Hampton Roads temperatures feel subzero

Southeastern Virginia may see both high winds and extreme cold Saturday into Sunday, with wind chills dipping as low as minus-10 to minus-5.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Wakefield said gusts throughout the region may reach up to 55 to 60 mph and extreme cold and wind warnings were active throughout the region Saturday morning.

Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and the Eastern Shore could see mid-50 mph wind gusts, while the rest of Hampton Roads and Williamsburg likely are looking at gusts in the mid-40 mph range, according to the weather service.

It will be dangerously cold across the region: Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Hampton and Newport News could reach wind chill — or “feels like” — temperatures near zero overnight Saturday.

The very cold wind chills could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken, according to the weather service. Outdoor animals should have a warm, dry shelter, food and unfrozen water.

Looking ahead, temperatures next week in Hampton Roads should be between the mid 30s and low 50s.
