Automated speed cameras to be installed at a few Virginia Beach schools

VIRGINIA BEACH — A handful of schools will soon be equipped with automated speed detection cameras, a measure city officials said should allow police officers more flexibility without a lapse in enforcement at places the cameras monitor.

The technology will check the speed of passing vehicles, flagging any that go over the limit. Cameras will record the date, time, location, license plate and speed, according to the city’s announcement. Violators will receive citations by mail.

Signs reading “photo enforced” will be affixed to speed limit signs in areas where the cameras are. For the first 30 days after the cameras are installed, only warning notices will be issued. After the warning phase, citations of $100 will be issued to violators.

This academic year, seven schools will be equipped with the cameras. Red Mill Elementary School, Centerville Elementary School and Great Neck Middle School/John B. Dey Elementary School will be the first schools to have the devices installed, by Feb. 17, according to the city. The remaining four this year — Seatack Elementary School/Birdneck Elementary School, Woodstock Elementary School, Salem Middle School/Salem High School, and North Landing Elementary School/Technical and Career Education campus — will see the technology later, at an unspecified time.

For the 2026-2027 academic year, seven more schools will be equipped with cameras. Those schools are listed by the city as Bayside Middle School/Bettie F. Williams Elementary School, Brookwood Elementary School, Rosemont Elementary School, Hermitage Elementary School, Holland Elementary School, Creeds Elementary School and New Castle Elementary School.

The installation of the automated cameras comes nearly a year after they were approved by the City Council last March. Several surrounding cities are already using the cameras in school zones.

A portion of the proceeds generated by the automated camera fines will go toward traffic safety efforts, the city’s announcement said.
