Generally speaking, is Boca Raton on the right track or the wrong track, and why?
Generally speaking, the City of Boca Raton is “on the right track.” This is a city where our residents take pride in calling it their home.
Boca Raton consistently ranks as a desirable, high-quality place to live, with a strong sense of community, good schools, and high resident satisfaction in many surveys. In a study of affluent U.S. communities, Boca came in second for overall happiness among residents of similar cities.
City leaders are investing in road safety and pedestrian improvements through initiatives like Vision Zero and federal grants to redesign and improve street infrastructure. Utility services and
essential systems like drinking water have earned statewide recognition, reflecting solid municipal management. The city’s official vision and strategic values emphasize financial responsibility, sustainability, and strong community partnerships, which set a positive framework for long-term planning. Boca attracts business, innovation, and a well-educated workforce, strengthening economic prospects.
How will you vote on ballot question No. 1, and why? (police headquarters, public safety improvements)
I intend to vote “YES” for the bond issue.
How will you vote on ballot question No. 2, and why? (Lease of downtown land, public improvements, Memorial Park)
I am undecided. My Vote-by-Mail ballot is sitting on my desk and I have not made a definitive decision on how I will vote. While the City needs to update its municipal facilities, I am concerned by the density being proposed within the 8 acres the city has proposed to lease to the developers, Terra/Frisbie. The plan before the voters has improved significantly from what was originally proposed and the preservation of open space west of Boca Raton Blvd (including the recognition of Memorial Park) are very positive, I am concerned about the additional traffic congestion the proposed development will have (specially on Palmetto Park Rd which is a constrained roadway and already exceeding capacity).
Are you satisfied that the ballot language approved by the City Council accurately reflects the details of the ballot questions?
The ballot language for QUESTION 1 is straightforward and offers the voters the salient points of the proposed general obligation bonds. However, I believe, as pointed out by Council Member Thomson, the language for QUESTION 2 advocates for approval rather than being neutral. Thomson’s use ChatGBT to evaluate the ballot language made it clear the “spin” of the ballot question is deliberately positive.
The Florida Legislature is considering proposals to reduce or eliminate property taxes. Do you agree the taxes are too high, and what tax cut proposals do you support?
It is clear to resident of Florida that property taxes have become an impediment to home ownership. Residents are being driven out of their homes as the cost of ownership (taxes, insurance and property maintenance) has exploded over the past few years. In the City of Boca Raton, the tax base has grown significantly due to construction, redevelopment and a significant bump in values, post-pandemic. While the city can take credit for holding the millage steady, those increases in the value of the properties has given the city a significant bump in revenue. The municipal and county governments need to work more efficiently. Viewing the proposals being debated in Tallahassee, I would support an increase in the HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION for residents and would see additional protections for longterm residents (10 years +) over 65 years old being appropriate.
What most distinguishes you from your opponent(s)?
I have a legal background (a plus when required to review ordinances offered for approval); I have been a successful business owner; I have been a resident of South Florida for over 30 years; and have the added benefit of my past public service experience (both at the municipal and county level of government). I recognize the City Council is a collaborative body on which you need a majority (3/5) to prevail. I am a consensus builder and have an open mind.
