Much to Old Dominion’s frustration on the Monarchs’ Senior Day, the James Madison women’s streaks continued Saturday afternoon at Chartway Arena before 3,869 in the opener of a women’s-men’s doubleheader.
Junior guard Bree Robinson scored 30 points, setting her career high in the third quarter, and the Dukes (20-8, 11-4 Sun Belt) took control with a burst shortly before halftime and rolled to an 87-53 victory over ODU (15-12, 6-8). It was JMU’s 13th consecutive triumph in the Royal Rivalry and the Dukes’ sixth consecutive triumph overall.
Peyton McDaniel had 16 points and Grace McDonough 13 for JMU, whose 8-0 run provided a 40-29 halftime lead.
Ashanti Barnes, a Lake Taylor High graduate and former Monarch who recently scored her 1,000th JMU point, had five assists and four rebounds but just four points. Princess Anne High alumna Zakiya Stephenson had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Those were among ODU’s 21 turnovers compared to JMU’s 12.
For ODU, which shot 37% (23 of 62), Kelsey Thompson scored 12 and Simone Cunningham 10. Simaru Fields played only 12 minutes, missing time with a leg injury, and had seven points.
Norfolk State 77, Delaware State 45: The Spartans (13-12, 8-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) struggled in the first half at Echols Hall but dominated in the second against the Hornets (4-21, 1-9), who have lost five consecutive games.
NSU won its third game in a row, outscoring DSU 37-14 in the fourth quarter.
Jasha Clinton had 17 points and five rebounds for the Spartans, who hit 12 of 24 from 3-point range and had four double-digit scorers. Da’Brya Clark and Cire Worley scored 14 points apiece, and Niyah Gaston came off the bench to add 12. Anjanae “AJ” Richardson had five points and seven assists.
Ericka Huggins led Delaware State with 12 points.
Christopher Newport 98, Regent 30: The Captains (19-4) breezed past the Royals (6-16) at Freeman Center in a clash of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference’s two Hampton Roads schools. CNU won its fourth consecutive game and ended Regent’s two-game winning streak.
Kendra Rigo was 5 of 8 from 3-point range and had 23 points for CNU. Sydney Richardson and Kaycee Doughty added 12 points apiece for the Captains, who outrebounded Regent 60-34.
Kennedy Shipman led Regent with 13 points, and Mikaylah Telfer grabbed 10 rebounds.
Virginia Wesleyan 67, Eastern Mennonite 59: Trailing 44-34 with 3:44 left in the third quarter in Harrisonburg, the Marlins (13-10, 7-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) responded by outscoring the Royals 33-15 the rest of the way.
Brianna Long had 23 points, 17 rebounds and three steals for VWU. Maesyn Blaylock had 14 points and five rebounds, Bre Robinson had 11 points and six rebounds, and Keira Bagwell had six points and 10 rebounds.
For EMU (6-18, 0-14), Grace Burke had 20 points and eight rebounds, and Jeriyah Osborne added 15 points, four rebounds and four steals.
No. 1 Connecticut 71, Marquette 56: Azzi Fudd scored 25 points, Sarah Strong had 19 of her 22 in the second half and the Huskies remained unbeaten. UConn (27-0, 16-0 Big East) has won 43 straight overall games, as well as 63 straight Big East regular-season or tournament games. UConn had won its last 21 games by at least 25 points before Saturday.
The Golden Eagles fell to 16-10, 10-7.
