COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Christopher Newport, ranked 10th in Division III, began its season with a 6-3 victory at Methodist in Game 1 of a doubleheader in Fayetteville, North Carolina, then hammered the Monarchs 14-2 in Game 2 Saturday.
In Game 1, Natalie Quinlan and Kimberly Jones socked first-inning homers, and Caroline Alger pitched 4 2/3 hitless innings of relief for the victory.
In Game 2, Candace Slaw had three singles and three RBIs. She finished the day 6 of 8 with two stolen bases. Freshman Cora Grace Sparger made her debut in the circle as a Captain, pitching all five innings to pick up the win.

NSU athletes earn top-10 spots
Norfolk State turned in multiple top-10 finishes at the Indoor Pre-Nationals at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
In the sprints, Kendrick Winfield placed fourth in the 200 meters in 21.49 seconds, and Christopher Basking followed in sixth at 21.55.
Distance events featured standout performances from Daniel Mathenge, who took second in the 3,000 meters at 8:35.67.
Lewis Too posted a fourth-place finish in 8:37.20, Mathew Kipkoech placed sixth in 8:41.29, and Basil Koech earned eighth in 9:13.02.
In field events, Landon Walker cleared 4.50 meters to place second in the pole vault, and Christian White reached 3.90 meters for fourth. In the high jump, Kristopher Stephens finished fifth at 1.93 meters.
COLLEGE WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS
Tribe achieves top score but finishes third
William & Mary posted its best score of the season despite placing third at a tri-meet hosted by George Washington on Sunday afternoon.
New Hampshire claimed the team title with a 194.65 and was followed by GW (193.4) and W&M (192.0).
The Tribe also recorded their best score of the season on bars (47.875) and matched a season best on vault (47.850).
Hannah Burke highlighted the Tribe’s individual performances and tied for second on floor, as she equaled a season high (9.825). Ashley Ruedy tied for fourth with a career-best 9.775.
Michelle Ngo and Ascha Laird led W&M on bars and tied for fifth with a 9.750.
Jasmine Hou and Melanie Faulkner tied for seventh on beam with a 9.675, as the score marked a career high for Hou.
COLLEGE MEN’S GYMNASTICS
Tully shines as W&M falls at No. 5 Nebraska
William & Mary finished fourth at a quad meet hosted by fifth-ranked Nebraska on Saturday afternoon.
The host Huskers claimed the team title with a 319.65 and were followed by Greenville (309.4), Simpson (298.95) and W&M (296.05).
In addition to posting its second-best team total this season, the Tribe recorded season highs on floor (52.7) and high bar (52.1).
Luke Tully highlighted W&M’s individual performances and was the team’s top scorer in three events. He placed fourth on high bar with a season-best 13.45, and he finished sixth on floor (13.4) and seventh on vault (13.55).

CNU squads shut out Averett
Both Christopher Newport teams beat Averett 7-0 on indoor courts Sunday without losing a set at James River Country Club in Newport News.
The Captains’ men (3-0), ranked 24th in Division III, beat a 36th-ranked Cougars squad that is the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference tourney champ.
The CNU women (2-0), ranked 25th, overcame a team that was the ODAC runner-up last season.
