Jack O’Leary had two goals and an assist as the Norfolk Admirals gained a badly needed series victory Sunday, defeating the Greensboro Gargoyles 5-3 before 5,418 at Scope.
The Admirals (18-25-2-0) took two of three games in the three-day set, winning in Greensboro (13-26-5-1) before splitting a pair at Scope.
O’Leary’s first goal, on a power play, tied the score 5:49 into the second period and ignited a flurry of three goals in 2:03.
Brady Fleurent scored the next two at even strength, getting assists from Kristof Papp on both. It was 3-1 Norfolk 7:52 into the second period.
But as usual this season, victory didn’t come easily for the Admirals. The Gargoyles’ Logan Nelson scored his second goal of the day 9:07 into the third period, and Tyler Weiss tied the game at the 12:52 mark.
But O’Leary came to the rescue, scoring unassisted at 15:08. Chase Yoder made it 5-3 off an O’Leary assist just 86 seconds later, and goalie Isaac Poulter held on for a 25-save victory.
The Admirals will stay at home for a three-game, four-day series against the Fort Wayne Komets, starting at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.
