Virginia Beach shopping center welcomes pink cowgirl-themed coffee shop

A popular pink coffee shop has brought dreamy drinks to La Promenade shopping center.

Sleepy Cowgirl Coffee has been serving espresso, matcha, lattes and more from a vintage pink horse trailer since June. Owners Sam Colonna and Abraham Quirantes have hauled their pink trailer all over Virginia Beach and said some of their favorite and most successful spots were The Shack, Plant House, Swell, and Cullipher Farms. Most recently, they had a semi-permanent location in the parking lot of La Promenade.

Colonna said she had dreamed of opening a coffee shop and threw the idea out to Quirantes.

“I worked a corporate job and hated it,” she said. “When I asked Abraham, he said yes.”

Quirantes, who’s active-duty Navy, said he always wanted to own a business and never had the time to pursue it seriously. Quirantes said a storefront wasn’t part of their original plan — at least not for a few years.

“We wanted to build a solid client base first,” he said. “What we didn’t expect was how quickly and strongly the community supported us.”

The couple was approached about opening a brick-and-mortar location during their second week of opening. It wasn’t the right fit, so they declined. After being invited to do a pop-up at La Promenade, they heard of a space coming up for lease. They decided to go for it and signed.

There were also practical reasons to opening a storefront, Quirantes said.

“The trailer is physically demanding, heavily weather dependent and limited to four hours of serving due to storage capacity,” he said. “Also, I’ll be returning to sea in about three years and wanted Sam to have a stable place to work without so many external variables.”

The new store, in the Hilltop shopping district at 1860 Laskin Road, brings the pale pink palette from the trailer with fun cowgirl-themed decor. Pink cowboy boots filled with greenery and disco balls line a wall, and fun accessories such as cowboy boot lip balm keychains, trucker hats and totes are for sale.

“The store reflects everything people loved about the trailer, just expanded. Think pinks, warm neutrals, Western touches, and lots of thoughtful details,” Colonna said. “It’s somewhere you want to stay, not just grab a drink and leave. We want every visit to feel special.”

In addition to selling their coffee, matcha and specialty drinks like Buckin Banana (caramelized banana latte), Dusty Caramel (creme brulee latte), Bonfire Babe (s’mores latte) and Sleepy Cowgirl (strawberry cream matcha latte), the store has expanded its food menu with bagels, croissants, toasts, and pastries and cakes from local bakeries. Also, to-go sandwiches from Yorkies will be available.

Sleepy Cowgirl Coffee, known for its playful presentation, will continue to rotate and offer seasonal drinks. Colonna said the fun details make their drinks feel like a treat, not just a cup of coffee.

“Sam’s creative brain is on display when you come into the shop,” Quirantes said. “All of the details are intentional and meant to make it a fun experience. We’re building more than a coffee shop. We’re building a place people feel connected to.”
