ODU community to honor graduate killed by ICE in Sunday events

Old Dominion University community members plan to hold several events Sunday honoring a former creative writing major killed by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis several weeks ago.

The events will celebrate the life of Renee Good, a 2020 ODU graduate and 37-year-old mother of three. Good was shot and killed Jan. 7 in Minneapolis by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross while trying to move her car away from the scene of an immigration raid.

Sunday’s events begin at 1 p.m. with a silent prayer and poetry reading at the university’s spirit rock near the Webb University Center. Good, a poet and writer, won the 2020 Academy of American Poets Prize.

Beginning at 1:30 p.m., a procession with songs and signs will proceed from the rock to Elation Brewing, about a mile away at 5104 Colley Ave.

From 2-9 p.m. at Elation, a celebration of Good’s life and work is planned to feature several music acts. Organizers also will be accept donations to create a annual poetry award in Good’s honor.

Good’s killing, along with the fatal shooting of Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration officials, drew widespread condemnation of President Donald Trump’s aggressive enforcement tactics. After the shootings, Trump replaced the official in charge of the citywide immigration raids and later annouced the end of the federal agent surge in Minneapolis.
