Virginia Wesleyan to open ODAC men’s basketball tourney play at home Tuesday night

Va. Wesleyan starts ODAC tourney play

No. 2 seed Virginia Wesleyan begins play in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday versus No. 7 Averett.

The winner will earn a trip to Salem Civic Center for a semifinal against the victor of No. 6 Washington and Lee at No. 3 Roanoke. On the bracket’s other side, No. 8 Guilford is at No. 1 Randolph-Macon and No. 5 Lynchburg is at No. 4 Hampden-Sydney.

Randolph-Macon (23-2), which split a pair of games with the Marlins, climbed a spot to No. 1 in the d3hoops.com Top 25.
Ranked 35th according to NCAA criteria cited by d3hoops.com, VWU has a chance to make the 64-team Division III field even if it doesn’t win the tournament.

Also in the d3hoops.com Top 25, Mary Washington (21-3) and Christopher Newport (20-4), who could face each other in the title game of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference tourney in Santa Cruz, California, are ranked seventh and 10th, respectively. Roanoke is 25th.

Virginia (24-3) climbed three spots to No. 11 in the AP Top 25, which Duke leads for the record 148th time.

Norfolk State freshman guard Adrean Newton, a Maury High graduate, was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth time. Over two games, he had nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, four rebounds, five assists and four steals.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Hampton High grad honored by MEAC

Maryland Eastern Shore’s Kaliya Perry, a Hampton High graduate, was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week. She grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked two shots and added two steals alongside eight points in a 66-64 win at Coppin State.

COLLEGE INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

W&M men third, Hampton teams fourth, second in CAA indoor championships

William & Mary was third and Hampton was fourth in the Coastal Athletic Association’s indoor championships in Boston.
North Carolina A&T repeated its title with 175.5 points, followed by Northeastern (121), W&M (120) and the Pirates (98) in the eight-team field.

The Tribe’s Brian Walsh, who won the pentathlon with 3,774 points, was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer. W&M’s Matthew Twyman won the 800 meters in 1:51.48, teammate Uriah Harris won the shot put at 17.47 meters, and the Tribe’s 4×800-meter relay of Travis Wolfe-Thompson, Twyman, Amberson Bauer and Jonathan Kumer set a meet record of 7:33.25.

W&M’s Leighton McGee won the pole vault by clearing 4.81 meters, though runner-up Floyd Tucker of Hampton also cleared that height. The Tribe’s Hayes Trapp won the 5,000 in 14:22.14.

Hampton’s 4×400 relay of Justin Anderson, Ethan Moody, Jason Woods and Jayden Poteat set a CAA record of 3:08.75, and the Pirates’ Marquis White set a meet long-jump record of 7.57 meters.

In the women’s competition, Elon earned its first title with 135 points as defending champion Hampton was second with 121.5. W&M was sixth with 43.

HU’s Brianna Charles was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer after totaling 21.5 points. She won the 60- and 200-meter dashes in 7.38 and 23.47 seconds, respectively.

Hampton’s Rochele Solmon won the shot put at 15.10 meters, and her teammates Shari Brown, Avah Savage, Mekayla Wilson and Kylee King set a 4×800 meet record of 8:55.5.

Hampton’s Danielle James won the long jump at 6.06 meters. The Tribe’s Elizabeth Strobach set a meet record by clearing 4.05 meters in the pole vault.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

W&M infielders honored by CAA

Two William & Mary infielders earned Coastal Athletic Association awards after helping the Tribe win two of three games in a home series versus Binghamton.

Sophomore Jamie Laskofski was the Player of the Week. He hit .545 (6 of 11) with two triples, four runs and five RBIs. Freshman Matthew Kosuda was the Rookie of the Week. He was 5 for 10 with a double, home run and six RBIs, leaving his season average at .364.

**Virginia’s home game against George Washington was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday because much warmer temperatures are expected Wednesday. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

NSU catcher Riddick is MEAC Player of Week

Norfolk State sophomore catcher Bristyl Riddick was named the MEAC Player of the Week. She powered the Spartans to a 2-2 weekend, including wins over Quinnipiac and Saint Francis of Pennsylvania.

She batted .462, scoring four runs on six hits — including three homers — while driving in four runs. She had 13 putouts and three assists without an error.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Tribe’s Begley named CAA’s top rookie

William & Mary freshman Nora Begley was selected as the Coastal Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, following Mila Millhouse’s selection last week.

Begley finished the week with three goals, an assist and two draw controls over a loss to Richmond and a victory over George Mason.
