VHSL girls wrestling: First-place and third-place matches in the state championships

Tallwood’s Tatiana Denig recorded a second-period pin of Annandale’s Darling Saravia to win her second consecutive Virginia High School League girls wrestling championship at 145 pounds on Wednesday at the Henrico Sports and Events Center.

Denig, who became the Beach District’s first girls state champ last season, led 12-2 when she pinned Saravia at the 4:43 mark. Denig opened the two-day tournament with a first-round fall in 57 seconds, followed by a quarterfinal pin and a 6-1 decision in the semifinals over top-seeded Serenity Shearer of Lord Botetourt.

Denig was one of four state champions from Hampton Roads.

At 107 pounds, Tabb’s Jayden Crotty won the championship with a 7-1 decision over Rock Ridge’s Betsy Polanco. Crotty, a state finalist last season at 107, reached the final with a first-round technical fall and back-to-back pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

King’s Fork’s Hayden Mayo defeated Courtland’s Elena Carter 2-1 in the 152-pound final. Mayo scored a first-period reversal and held on from there. She recorded a first-round pin, a 6-5 decision in the quarterfinals over eventual third-place finisher Kelynn Dunn of Orange County and reached the final with a semifinal fall.

Akaila Gray gave King’s Fork its second champion with a title at 235 pounds, winning by a disqualification over Colonial Forge’s Carrie Ray. Gray opened the tournament with a first-period pin and followed that with decisions of 6-2 and 4-2.
