A Seminole County Sheriff’s Office deputy is accused of falsifying the number of overtime hours he worked, allowing him to collect thousands of dollars in pay he didn’t earn.
Nestor Nieves Jr. was arrested Thursday on a charge of organized fraud. From October 2024 through August of last year, he submitted timesheets reflecting overtime hours he did not work while working assigned to off-duty overtime details, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office announcing the arrest.
Nieves would work overtime at Seminole County’s Northwest Branch Library in Lake Mary. While there, he masked his location and would leave early but still claim four hours worked on his timesheets. Multiple inconsistencies were eventually found based on his timesheets and logs from the library, court records show.
Nieves has been employed with the sheriff’s office since 2015. He was suspended in August pending the outcome of the investigation.
He has now been served with a notice of proposed discipline for termination by Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma but may request a hearing to appeal his proposed firing, the agency’s news release said.
Another deputy has been suspended as part of a related ongoing investigation involving similar allegations. Any potential new charges will be announced at the conclusion of the investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
The arrest comes after a 23-year veteran and former spokesperson for the Sanford Police Department was arrested in December on similar charges. He was allegedly paid thousands of dollars for allegedly fake off-duty work shifts.
