Rep. Chip LaMarca is leading a movement to change the county’s name to “Lauderdale County.”
Broward has 31 municipalities, and it is much more than Fort Lauderdale. Let’s keep it Broward.
Why doesn’t LaMarca focus on improving affordability of home insurance, improving public transit and reducing homelessness, instead of increasing confusion and financial costs, which will come with changing the name of Florida’s second most-populated county?

The dumbest idea yet
This is the dumbest idea yet. It’s surprising that it has bipartisan support.
Will Pembroke Park become part of the new “Lauderdale County”?
Neither Democratic County Commissioner Michael Udine nor Republican Rep. Chip LaMarca represents the average Broward constituent, living respectively in Parkland and Lighthouse Point.
How will changing the name benefit Coral Springs, Miramar or Pembroke Park?
As a Coral Springs resident, I do not tell people I live “near Fort Lauderdale.” I tell them where I actually live.
The businesses that advocates of the name change hope to benefit will be in Fort Lauderdale, not the county as a whole. The Gold Coast has plenty of business already. Changing the name in the hope that Republicans will treat the county differently is pie-in-the-sky, wishful thinking.
Udine says he “hears it (changing the name) all the time” from the business community. If that is true, why is it just now coming to the public’s attention? In my 22 years of living in Broward, this is the first time I’ve heard of the idea.
The excuse is that Dade County changed its name in 1997, but it didn’t take much heavy lifting to add Miami to its name. Changing to Lauderdale County is totally different. But go ahead, put it on the ballot and let voters decide.

A waste of money
Why on earth would they want to change the name? The expense to go through to change it on everything is utterly wasteful.
What’s wrong with Broward?

Mamdani’s ‘credentials’
In a June article in the New York Post, George Arzt, who was former New York Mayor Ed Koch’s press secretary, said Zohran Mamdani is not prepared to be mayor and “totally lacks credentials for the job.”
Mamdani’s credentials actually are impeccable in today’s Democratic Party.
A classified ad for a NYC mayoral candidate would read like this: “Are you a former rapper who believes in free bus service and child care, rent freezes, city-run grocery stores and higher taxes on the rich? Have you lived on your own for a whole 10 years and been a naturalized citizen for seven years? Would you like the minimum wage to be $30 per hour? Have you been endorsed by Bernie Sanders? If the answer to any of these is yes, we have the job for you.”
Mamdani has the perfect credentials to run as a Democrat for mayor in NYC and lead the “Where’s my free stuff?” movement. He also could have a bright future in Venezuela.

Compassion in the UK
After reading the letter to the editor, “A lack of civility,” on Oct. 27, I need to respond to the accusation that Britain’s Muslim community did not express condolences or regret over the murders of two Jewish people.
I was in the UK during the horrific attack on two members of a synagogue. I watched extensive coverage on the BBC and other networks. I witnessed members of the Muslim and Christian communities condemn the attacks and offer support to their Jewish neighbors.
Perhaps the letter writer should expand his network TV viewing.
