I’m an 85-year-old grandmother and great-grandmother writing to express my profound sorrow and outrage at the destruction of our elegant White House East Wing by our deranged would-be king.
Our beautiful Rose Garden has been replaced with a Panera Bread patio — nice for Panera but not for the White House.
The beauty of the people’s house has been torn away to be replaced by a gaudy, tasteless golden ballroom, much like Mar-a-Lago and Trump himself. I am ashamed of the Republican Party and its continued bad behavior.
I have voted for both Democrats and Republicans but will never again vote Republican. Florida is not on my proud-to-be-here list either, thanks to our white-booted governor whose book bans and other authoritarian measures have completely disturbed and disgusted me.
I hate cold weather. But if I could convince my family to come, I would be happy to live in Canada. In my lifetime, I never believed that I would see this happening. The rest of the world sees this as well, and they are laughing at us. Vote, vote, vote them out.

Saving Florida bears
I will keep my eye out now to spend $5 for every member of my family, to save as many bears as we can from being hunted. Thanks to the editors for bringing this to our attention (“Saving Florida bears, five bucks at a time,” Editorial, Oct. 26). Good job!

Signs at Publix supermarkets remind customers that only service animals are allowed. However, the grocery chain has opted to allow customers to openly carry firearms, following a recent state appeals court decision.
Dogs? No. Guns? Sure.
So dogs (except for service animals) are not permitted in Publix — but guns are?

Sanctimonious senators
The Sun Sentinel recently opined negatively on Republican Attorney General Pam Bondi (and her “limp ethics,” Oct. 19), but it seems the paper overlooked the past tactics of Democrats.
There was nonstop harassment of Trump by using a meme of Russian collusion, false charges by blue-state prosecutors and calling him vicious names such as Nazi, Fascist or dictator.
Now the Sun Sentinel claims Bondi is weaponizing the law, which is what Democrats have been doing. The newspaper criticized Bondi for exposing the hypocrisy of partisan senators who were questioning her and trying to embarrass her.
Should Bondi just sit there and take their barbs without a retort?
The phrase “people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” surely applies to the sanctimonious senators who tried to embarrass Bondi. The Sun Sentinel’s bias is again showing.

A selfless gesture
In the midst of war, political unrest and Mafia-related gambling stories, it warmed my heart to read about financier Timothy Mellon making an anonymous $130 million donation to keep our armed forces paid during the shutdown.
George Steinbrenner once said that if you do something good and more than two people know about it, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.
It’s important to note that Mellon made his incredible gesture with the intent to remain anonymous, but as is often the case inside the Beltway, it’s nearly impossible to keep a good story from getting out.
President Trump called Mellon a great citizen and a “substantial man.” I suggest that he award Mr. Mellon the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to inspire more acts of patriotism. And if the shutdown persists, who will be the next patriotic billionaire, with $130 million to spare, to follow Mellon’s lead?
