Miami of Ohio rallies in second half to spoil ODU men’s opener

OXFORD, Ohio — A promising first half to begin Old Dominion’s second season of the Mike Jones era turned into second-half domination by Miami of Ohio as the Redhawks won 87-72 in the MAC-SBC Challenge at Millett Hall.

ODU, though missing Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year Robert Davis Jr., led by as many as 14 points in the first half. But
a 15-0 run over a five-minute span of the second half gave Miami a 79-62 lead and effectively ended the Monarchs’ upset hopes.

Four ODU players scored in double digits. LJ Thomas had 13 points, KC Shaw 11 and Caelum Swanton-Rodger 10. Jordan Battle, a Norfolk Collegiate graduate and transfer from Coastal Carolina, had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Jared Turner added nine points, five rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Miami, 25-9 last season and predicted second in the 13-team Mid-American Conference, had five double-figure scorers, led by Brant Byers with 18 points. Evan Ipsaro added 16 and Peter Suder 14. Reserve Luke Skaljac had 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

ODU got off to a stunning start. The Monarchs led by scores such as 8-0, 18-4 and 37-23, and the halftime margin was 45-37.

The RedHawks quickly grabbed the momentum early in the second half, moving ahead for the first time at 53-52 when Almar Atlason sank a 3-pointer with 14:23 remaining.

The last tie was at 58. After Donovan Raymond’s layup for ODU cut Miami’s lead to 64-62 at the 7:53 mark, the Monarchs’ offense went dry as the RedHawks pulled away.

ODU will play its home opener at 7 p.m. Thursday against Division III Randolph College at Chartway Arena.
