Maerine “Mimi” Mitchell is stepping down from her position as president and CEO of Volunteer Hampton Roads.
The board of directors announced on Wednesday that Mitchell’s last day would be Jan. 31 before she heads to a new position in Northern Virginia. The Norfolk-based nonprofit organization matches volunteers with service opportunities and promotes regional volunteerism and corporate philanthropy.
Mitchell, who took the helm in February 2024, wraps up more than 15 years working in nonprofits in Hampton Roads. She previously worked as director of community engagement at Habitat for Humanity Peninsula & Greater Williamsburg.
Volunteer Hampton Roads is grateful for Mitchell’s leadership and dedication and wishes her the best in her new endeavor, board chair Hope Sinclair said in a news release.
Hampton Roads Chamber President and CEO Bryan K. Stephens, who is also on the nonprofit’s board, said Mitchell worked tirelessly to strengthen the community through service: “Her collaborative spirit and vision have been invaluable, and we commend her for her remarkable work.”
The board is forming a search committee to find a new chief executive. The position will be posted to the Volunteer Hampton Roads website on Dec. 1.
