One man was killed and another was seriously wounded Tuesday afternoon in a shooting at a motel in Midtown Newport News.
The double shooting took place just after 5 p.m. at the Palace Inn and Suites, at 10608 Jefferson Ave. That’s south of Ivy Farms Road on a stretch of the city’s busiest thoroughfare.
The men were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Medics said on radio transmissions that one man had been shot in the neck, the other in the chest.
Police said at about 10 p.m. that one mad had died while the other remained hospitalized.
More than a dozen Newport News officers and crime scene technicians were still at the scene as of 7:30 p.m., as traffic on Jefferson Avenue continued to proceed past.
The shooting took place in one of several outdoor stairwells that serve as access points to rooms in the three-story motel.
Police did not immediately reveal a motive for the shooting, and no one was in custody as of 8 p.m.
Before being known as the Palace Inn and Suites, the motel was known as the Brentwood Suites and the Economy Suites Motel.
