More than 200 birds were recovered from what law enforcement described as a cockfighting operation in Virginia Beach, officials said Monday.
Authorities said the cockfighting ring was operating at the 600 block of Princess Anne Road, near Back Bay. Virginia Beach police said in a news release that officers were dispatched to the area on Aug. 22 for reports of “unaccompanied aggressive dogs” loose in the area. Surveillance at the site revealed “a large number of birds.”
In total, 213 birds were released to the VBPD Animal Services Bureau. Thirty-six were roosters, and two of the birds were found injured and were euthanized. Each bird will undergo a mycoplasma test to determine their health, police said.
Evidence from the scene is being evaluated by the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for a review to determine if any charges will be brought.
