NEWPORT NEWS — Four inmates were hospitalized after overdosing last week, according to the Newport News Sheriff’s Office.

The inmates were hospitalized due to an “unknown substance” on Thursday, according to authorities. The inmates have returned to the jail safely “because of the heroic acts of our deputies and medical staff,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident is under investigation.
