4 people wounded in Newport News dog attack; officer fires at one of the canines

NEWPORT NEWS — Four people were hospitalized after being wounded in a dog attack Monday night in the city’s Hidenwood section, according to Newport News police.

Officers went to Barbour Drive, off Hiden Boulevard, about 8:30 p.m. in response to a 911 call about “two vicious canines” having bitten people.

An officer at the scene shot at a dog that was aggressively approaching her, said police spokeswoman Kelly King.

“The canine was advancing at the officer, who then fired but did not hit the dog,” King said. It was not immediately clear how many rounds the officer fired.

The officer was not one of the four people wounded, she said. It could not be immediately determined whether the four people who were injured have been released from the hospital.

Two dogs were taken into the custody of Newport News Animal Services, which is leading the investigation. Neither were injured.

A spokeswoman for the city, Gabrielle Torres Wolfe, said the investigation is ongoing.

She did not have information Tuesday on the breed of the dogs, but said both remain in custody of Animal Services, “where they will stay for the duration of the investigation.”

No arrests had been made as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.
