4 William & Mary, 3 Hampton men’s basketball games set for CBS Sports Network

4 W&M, 3 HU games going to CBS Sports Network

Four William & Mary men’s games and three Hampton men’s games were tabbed for broadcast on CBS Sports Network this season. Those are part of a schedule with which CBSSN will carry 24 CAA regular-season games, plus the tournament semifinals March 9 and final March 10.

W&M’s home games against Stony Brook (2 p.m. Dec. 31) and Campbell (noon Jan. 31) and the Tribe’s road games at the College of Charleston (7 p.m. Jan. 5) and against UNC Wilmington (7 p.m. Feb. 5) will be shown.

Three Hampton games, all at home, will be carried on CBSSN: North Carolina A&T (9 p.m. Jan. 19), Monmouth (7 p.m. Jan. 22) and Hofstra (8 p.m. Feb. 19).

Meanwhile, W&M announced that its Gold Rush weekend at Kaplan Arena will be held Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

The Campbell-W&M men’s game Jan. 31 will be followed when the Tribe women take on UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m. Feb. 1 on MASN. Fans are requested to wear gold for those games.

No. 13 CNU shuts out Virginia Wesleyan

Christopher Newport (10-1-2), ranked 13th in Division III, took control with two late first-half goals and won 2-0 over visiting Virginia Wesleyan (9-3-2).

After passes from Hanna Heaton and Katy Bronski, Alex Devers knocked in a shot to the left corner of the goal exactly 36 minutes into the match. Just 59 seconds later, Heaton netted a rebound after VWU goalkeeper Allie Greco saved her first attempt.

Greco had eight saves, and CNU’s Amy Sidaway made two.

Monmouth blanks Hampton

Monmouth (10-4-1, 5-2-0 Coastal Athletic Association) defeated Hampton 4-0 at Powhatan Field in Norfolk as Ashley Lavrich and Summer Reimet recorded a goal and two assists apiece.

Avery John made a season-high 10 saves for the Pirates (5-9-1, 0-6-0), who trailed 1-0 until the 53rd minute.

Virginia Wesleyan prevails

Host Virginia Wesleyan (8-4-1, 2-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) beat Eastern Mennonite 3-1. The Royals fell to 6-3-5, 1-2-3.

Mason Wakefield’s goal in the 36th minute, JaMarhe Wills’ penalty kick in the 57th and Nolan Schulte’s goal in the 70th put the Marlins ahead 3-0. Iverson Garcia netted a penalty kick in the 88th for EMU.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S GOLF

Georgia leads early at Evie Odom tourney

Georgia took the first-day lead at the Evie Odom Invitational at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach. The three-round event will resume Friday morning and continue through Saturday.

The Bulldogs combined for a 5-over-par 285, four shots ahead of second-place Coastal Carolina and five better than third-place James Madison. Old Dominion, the tourney host, was at 314 and last among the 12 teams.

Georgia’s Maria Eidhagen Harrouch shot a 2-under 68 for the individual lead, with Maryland’s Daniela Burgos Ortega, Coastal’s Ella Murray and UNC Greensboro’s Julia Baeumken sharing second at 1 under.

JMU’s Bella Flores, Avery Robinson and Emerson Elm shared 15th place at 72. Puneet Bajwa (78), Alina Shchepteva (78), Barbara Car (79) and Mariana Arronte (79) comprised ODU’s team score, with Great Bridge High alumna Julia Rafter at 80 for the Monarchs.

PGA Tour Champions event in Richmond to begin

The Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the first Charles Schwab Cub Playoffs event on the PGA Tour Champions, begins at 10:15 a.m. Friday on the Country Club of Virginia’s River Course in the Richmond area. The total prize money for the 54-hole event is $2.3 million, and all three rounds will be televised on the Golf Channel from 2-5 p.m.

Five past champions are in the field for the 10th-year event: Cup standings leader Miguel Ángel Jiménez (2019), No. 3 Steven Alker (2022), No. 27 Bernhard Langer (2021, 2017), No. 31 Tim O’Neal (2024), No. 53 Harrison Frazar (2023) and No. 65 Scott McCarron (2016).

David Duval, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen and Ángel Cabrera are among the other big names in the field.

2 UVA players gain spots on U.S. U-21 team

Virginia Cavaliers players Mia Abello of Houston and Mary Adams of Andover, Massachusetts, were among 18 women named to the U.S. U-21 team to compete in the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup from Dec. 1-13 in Santiago, Chile.

Half of the 18 players are from Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
