757Teamz boys volleyball Top 15: Kellam, Granby retain top spots

Kellam and Granby keep the Nos. 1 and 2 positions in this week’s 757Teamz.com boys volleyball rankings, and they maintain hold of a potential postseason encounter.

The Knights, in their one match of the week, powered past Bayside 3-1 (25-14, 25-16, 25-27, 25-10) as Joshua Eanes nailed six kills and four blocks. In spite of the win, Kellam dropped four places to No. 10 in the MaxPreps national rankings and third in Virginia, behind Glen Allen and Midlothian.

Granby swept Manor on Sept. 22 and No. 10 Maury on Wednesday. Against the Commodores, in a 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 win, the Comets were led by Davis Mendoza with 18 digs, Andrew Parker with 11 kills and Will Findlay with 30 assists.

Menchville, with a 3-1 win over Phoebus, rose to its highest position of the season at No. 3.

No. 4 Western Branch also has reached its highest ranking of the season, which is reaching the midway point. The Bruins swept Norcom 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-9) last Tuesday. In that match, Ben Smith recorded 12 kills and three aces, and Jaden Sands and Elijah Quinata each added four kills and two aces. Nate Brownfield provided 21 assists, three kills and four aces.

Thursday, the Bruins defeated No. 12 Great Bridge 3-0, as Quinata had 15 kills and four aces. The senior right setter also received collegiate offers from Division III teams Marymount and Juniata of Pennsylvania last week, according to Western Branch’s social media account.

Under coach Nikka Saunders, Western Branch is 10-1 and locked in a three-way battle with No. 6 Grassfield and No. 15 Nansemond River for the Southeastern District championship, with No. 12 Great Bridge and No. 14 Hickory nipping at their heels.

At 5-0 in the district, the Bruins hold the lead, but Tuesday evening’s match against the Grizzlies could give Western Branch some breathing room or further clog the tunnel to the top. For its part, Grassfield topped King’s Fork 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-16, 25-20) Thursday to knock the Bulldogs out of the rankings. Andrew Burke led the Grizzlies with 22 kills.

In another matchup of ranked teams, No. 8 First Colonial nipped No. 15 Green Run 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 15-7) Thursday. Bo Sawyer had 25 kills, six blocks, eight digs and five aces for the Patriots, who are chasing Kellam and Kempsville for the Beach District crown.

No. 11 Norfolk Christian (10-4) remains the king of area private-school teams, notching two more wins last week. Last Tuesday, the Ambassadors beat Catholic 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-7, 25-18). DJ Howell finished with 34 assists for Norfolk Christian, while Caleb Clark recorded 11 kills and six aces. On Thursday, they topped Peninsula Catholic 3-1 (25-14, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20). Jered Oh had 14 digs, seven kills and three aces.
