757Teamz field hockey Top 15: No. 1 Tabb’s 100th straight win puts Tigers in rare company

Top-ranked Tabb keeps piling on the statistics. The Tigers are just the fourth team in the Virginia High School League record books to reel off 100 consecutive wins — their last setback was a 2-1 overtime loss to neighborhood rival Poquoson in the 2020-21 Class 3 state final, which was contested in April after the season was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tabb is 10-0, has outscored opponents 85-3 and has not allowed a goal in eight straight games. The Tigers are ranked seventh in the latest MaxPreps National Field Hockey Rankings, joined only by No. 22 Gloucester as Hampton Roads representation in the rankings.

The Bay Rivers District has the spotlight on games Monday. The Tigers travel to York at 4:30 p.m., with Gloucester following at Poquoson at 7. Lexi Anderson totaled three goals and an assist in two wins for the Falcons, while Lucy Carpenter and Elizabeth Trant each had hat tricks to power the Islanders’ 6-1 victory over Lafayette.

Allie Tyszko had three goals and an assist for Norfolk Academy in an 8-0 win over Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. The Bulldogs then fell 3-2 to Trinity Episcopal, ranked fifth nationally by MaxPreps.

Bella Glenn notched four goals and Leah Daves chipped in with a hat trick for Cox in an 18-0 win over Green Run. The Falcons’ three losses are to Norfolk Academy, Trinity Episcopal and Collegiate of Richmond, the No. 2 team in the Max Preps national rankings. They next host Kellam at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Max Field Hockey posted all-tournament teams from the recently held National Invitational Tournament. Norfolk Academy junior midfielder Mia Jones and First Colonial sophomore keeper Addie Savoie were named to the Additional Top Performers list.

“The invitational is a great event for us to attend because it gives our team the opportunity to compete at a higher level,” said Patriots coach Meghan Smart, whose team rebounded with two Beach District wins following a pair of losses at the tournament in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. “The level of play from teams further north — in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut — is noticeably more competitive than what we typically see in the 757. Our goal wasn’t just to play field hockey, it was to compete in the game of field hockey. That competitive spirit will be crucial as we build momentum through the second half of our season and prepare for the pressure and challenges that come with potential postseason play.”
