York and Hickory remain unbeaten after torrid starts this season.
York (4-0) picked up two victories last week as Brit Barnes scored twice and had an assist in a win over Bay District rival Grafton. The Falcons have another key district matchup Wednesday when it hosts Gloucester at 7 p.m.
Hickory improved to 6-0 after freshman Abby Cullen totaled five goals and two assists in wins over Ocean Lakes and Deep Creek. Caroline Jones added three goals and two assists in those wins, and Erin Seery notched an unassisted hat trick in 10-0 triumph over Salem, which hosts Poquoson Friday 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, Poquoson’s Elizabeth Trant fired in five goals and recorded an assist in a pair of wins for the Islanders, which included a 2-1 edging of Western Branch. Poquoson travels for an early season heavyweight battle at Tabb on Monday at 7 — a showdown of two teams teams that have faced off in 4 of the last 5 Virginia High School League Class 3 state championships.
Norfolk Academy’s Allie Tyszko and Betsy McCabe each scored twice in last week’s 4-1 over Cox in a battle of ranked teams. Mia Jones tallied four goals in an 11-0 win over Steward School for the Bulldogs, who have a busy week: at home vs. Nansemond River at 4 p.m. Tuesday and then traveling to the prestigious Max Field Hockey Invitational at The Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. NA plays twice Saturday (vs. St. John’s School of Texas at 11 a.m., vs. Bryn Mawr of Maryland, 3 p.m.) before finishing the tournament schedule Sunday against Agnes Irwin School of Pennsylvania at 9 a.m.
First Colonial will also attend the Max Field Hockey Invitational, facing off against Palmyra Area of Pennsylvania at 3 p.m. Saturday, and then challenging Staples of Connecticut at 1 p.m. Sunday. First, though, the Patriots visit Beach rival Cox at 4 p.m. Thursday.
