There are few surprises at the top of the districts in South Hampton Roads: preseason favorites Green Run (Beach), Maury (Eastern) and Oscar Smith (Southeastern) are contenders.
But there were surprises elsewhere as most teams arrived at midseason. Here’s a look at the top players, biggest surprises and top teams in each 757 district in South Hampton Roads:
Beach District
Midseason Player of the Year: Green Run running back and Old Dominion commit Charles Jackson III has the Stallions vying for another district title. He has rushed for 826 yards and nine touchdowns. Others in the mix were Green Run’s Luke Ashcraft, a Kellam transfer, who has thrown for 1,324 yards with 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions. And Bayside quarterback Kam Kirby, who returned to the Marlins after transferring to Indian River last season, has thrown for 654 yards and eight touchdowns and has his team at 4-1.
Surprise team: Bayside is 4-1 for the first time since 2021 when the Marlins started 5-1. But they lost four of their final five games that year. Bayside also was 4-1 during the 2021 spring season after COVID. The Marlins meet Green Run on Oct. 17. If they can pull off the upset, they would have a chance to win a share of the district title. The last time Bayside won a district title was 2010.
District race: Green Run (6-0) is in the driver’s seat, although the Stallions have had to come from behind in their last two games to pull out victories. They have won 56 games in a row over Beach District opponents and 49 in the regular season. They face just one team with a winning record in their final four games. That team is Bayside. If the Marlins (4-1) can pull off the upset, they would have a chance to share the district title if they win out.
___
Eastern District
Maury quarterback Domo Everette (8) scrambles out of the pocket. Maury defeated Bishop McNamara 38-35 in the third overtime at Powhatan Field in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sept. 12, 2025. (Billy Schuerman/The Virginian-Pilot)
Midseason Player of the Year: Many wondered if Maury would be able to keep winning after Au’Tori Newkirk, a two-time Abe Goldblatt All-Tidewater Football Player of the Year, graduated. But sophomore Domo Everette has the Commodores rolling. He’s thrown for 1,325 yards and 16 touchdowns and accounted for 1,556 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns. Other contenders: Lake Taylor’s Keon Johnson is having a huge season. On offense, he’s rushed for 901 yards and 17 touchdowns. On defense, he has 43 tackles with two interceptions. Teammate Kevin Adams has thrown for 495 yards and seven touchdowns, and rushed for 431 yards and eight scores, while Churchland sophomore quarterback Logan Wynne has thrown for 1,328 yards and 16 touchdowns to lead the Truckers (5-1).
Surprise teams: Norview is 4-2, which is the best start for the Pilots since 2016 when they started 5-1 and advanced to the state semifinals before losing to eventual champion Highland Springs. Since that 2016 season, the Pilots have had just one winning season when they went 5-4 in 2021. Lake Taylor is back to its winning ways after going 3-7 last season. The Titans are 5-1 for the first time since 2022.
District race: Maury (4-1 overall, 2-0 district) has won 31 consecutive district games. The Commodores have won at least a share of the past six district titles. This season, they have outscored district opponents 168-6, including a 91-0 win over Booker T. Washington last week. They should roll to another district title.
___
Southeastern District
Oscar Smith quarterback Lonnie Andrews III (15) scrambles to avoid being sacked during a game against King’s Fork at King’s Fork High School in Suffolk on Friday, October 20, 2023. (Kendall Warner / The Virginian-Pilot)
Midseason Player of the Year: Oscar Smith quarterback Lonnie Andrews has thrown for 1,103 yards and 13 touchdowns to lead the Tigers (4-1 overall, 3-0 district). Other contenders: Tigers teammate and Michigan commit Travis Johnson has been a big-time player in the big games. Against ranked teams in Indian River and King’s Fork, he had 14 receptions for nearly 400 yards and five touchdowns. For the season he has 26 receptions for 512 yards and five touchdowns. Nansemond River quarterback and Syracuse commit Terrell Grant Jr. has thrown for 1,006 yards and 19 touchdowns, and rushed for 330 yards and six scores to lead the Warriors (5-0, 4-0).
Surprise team: Nansemond River is 5-0 for the first time since 1998 when the Warriors also began the season 5-0. They face their first test this week when they travel to play Indian River (4-1, 3-1). They play Oscar Smith on Oct. 24 and King’s Fork on Nov. 7.
District race: Oscar Smith is in the driver’s seat after beating Indian River and King’s Fork in back-to-back weeks. The Tigers have won at least a share of 18 of the last 20 titles.
