8th house this week collapses into the ocean in Buxton

It’s been a devastating week for the Outer Banks as the number of beachfront homes collapsing into the ocean has climbed to eight since Tuesday.

The latest collapse occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday at 46221 Tower Circle Road, Buxton, according to the Cape Hatteras National Park Service.

On Wednesday, another house fell at approximately 8 p.m. at 46207 Tower Circle Road, Buxton.

Since 2020, due to accelerated beach erosion in both Rodanthe and Buxton, now 20 houses in total have fallen.

Images posted to social media showed numerous other raised homes with floodwaters under them.

Buxton is under a coastal flood warning until 8 p.m. Friday and a high surf advisory until 4 a.m. Oct. 4, according to the National Weather Service. As of 5:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, NWS warned of the potential for 1 to 3 feet of flood inundation, including the likelihood of overwash along vulnerable locations along Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.

These conditions stem from a tight pressure gradient between hurricanes Imelda and Humberto as they began to accelerate east, the NWS said.

Five homes collapsed within an hour of each other Tuesday afternoon, and another fell later that evening.
