A New Jersey couple were killed Monday night in a head-on collision that flipped their car into a Burlington County lake.
John E. Hawley and Theresa Hawley, both 66, were traveling west on Quaker Bridge Road in Shamong Township when the Toyota he was driving smashed into a Ford F350 pickup truck going south on Route 206, state police told NJ Advance Media.
The husband and wife, of Marlton, N.J., sustained fatal injuries, while the other driver, 21-year-old Derek Gantham of Tabernacle, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police told Philadelphia’s NBC affiliate WCAU.
The impact of the 7:54 p.m. collision sent the Toyota tumbling into Atsion Lake, which is separated from the road by a guardrail at that point, according to Patch.com and area maps. The car landed upside down in the lake with the Hawleys inside. The front of the pickup was mangled, according to TV footage from the scene.
Route 206 between Stokes and Atsion Lake was closed for hours in both directions until about 2:30 a.m., the Shamong Township Office of Emergency Management said. The Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Co. and numerous other mutual aid partners helped work the scene.
Police were mum on details Tuesday, citing the ongoing investigation, and did not say exactly how the crash happened, how fast the drivers were going or who mat have been at fault.
Shamong Township is about 30 miles southeast of Philadelphia, in southern New Jersey.
