A Utah college student has died over the weekend after falling from a balcony at an on-campus dormitory.
The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. Sunday at at Utah Tech University‘s Campus View Student Housing.
The student — who has not been identified — was transported to St. George Regional Hospital where they died “due to the injuries sustained in the fall,” St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said in a statement.
The school identified the victim as only a 22-year-old man. An email to students described him as a freshman majoring in art, according to ABC4.
“Utah Tech University is devastated by the loss of a member of our Utah Tech family,” the school said in a statement. “His presence will be deeply missed on campus. Mental health professionals from UT’s Booth Wellness Center as well as resources on the SafeUT app and the 988 lifeline are available for students, faculty and staff needing assistance processing this tragedy. We are thinking of the family and friends and will continue to support one another as we grieve together during this difficult time.”
The Utah Tech University Police Department is investigating the death.
The incident comes several years after another student died in a fall at the same dormitory.
The university’s academic year began Aug. 20.
St. George is a city in southwestern Utah near the state’s borders with Arizona and Utah.
