Week 7 Football Rewind: Edgewater, DeLand still unbeaten; Oviedo wins

Edgewater, the No. 1-ranked team in the Sentinel’s Super 16 Coaches Poll, survived a scare Friday night at Winter Park, while DeLand also remained unbeaten and Oviedo was able to fight off rival Hagerty.

A third of the Orlando area’s high school football teams were idle in observance of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.

No. 1 Edgewater 28, No. 15 Winter Park 21: It’s a good thing Damian Moore was on his game for Edgewater (7-0). The Eagles needed every inch of his 243 yards rushing to knock off a fired up Winter Park squad. Moore scored four touchdowns, including two fourth-quarter TDs that provided the winning margin.

Winter Park (3-3) answered Moore’s first fourth-quarter touchdown when quarterback Eli Nickerson found Ayden Pouncey for a 64-yard catch-and-run with three-and-a-half minutes to play.

The Wildcats then forced an Edgewater punt and were threatening to tie the game late after Pouncey took the return 42 yards to put the ball at the Edgewater 39-yard line. The Eagles’ defense rose up and forced Pouncey out of bounds on a fourth-down play late in the game to seal the win.

“You see the true characteristic of a team when their back is against the wall,” Edgewater coach Patrick Browning said. “I’m proud of the way they responded even in the face of adversity.”

Edgewater quarterback Carter Emanuel threw for 136 yards on 17-for-21 passing with an interception. He found his brother Cole Emanuel nine times for 76 yards.

High school football Week 7: Edgewater, DeLand, Oviedo escape tight games

Winter Park rotated quarterbacks, and both were efficient. Onrique Archie threw for 136 yards on 10-for-17 passing and Nickerson threw for 131 yards on 8-for-12 passing with a passing touchdown and a rushing TD. Wide receiver Sebastian Lora had 8 catches for 106 yards and running back DeCorie Johnson ran for 71 yards on 18 carries.

No. 14 Oviedo 41, Hagerty 26: Oviedo junior quarterback Sebastian Galeano passed for 283 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Lions (4-2) past crosstown rival Hagerty in a non-district rivalry game.

Two of the TD tosses were to senior Dashon Febres, who is finally breaking out after missing eight games with a broken wrist last year.  Galeano hit Febres about 20 yards from the line of scrimmage both times, and Febres made two challenging catches in traffic and did the rest with some nifty running.

“Oh man, he’s unbelievable. Whoever gets him next year for college is getting a gem,” Oviedo coach Greg Odierno said. “He’s just scratching the surface of how dominant he can be. We see it every day in practice and he’s a special one.”

Galeano completed 11 of his first 13 pass attempts. He also connected for touchdowns with Emiliano Galarza and Carmari Solomon.

Brock Joyce scored Oviedo’s other touchdown and had 12 carries for 85 yards.

The 15-point final margin was no indication of how close the game was most of the way. Hagerty trailed 28–20 at halftime.

Led by senior quarterback Royce Jenkins, who threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns, Hagerty (3-3)  kept battling back. The TD passes were to Makiye McBurse, Greg Weatherington III and Gavin Miller. McBurse had 101 yards receiving. Running back Leandro Gutierrez ran for 98 yards and a TD and had 64 yards receiving,

“That’s the one thing this team does. … We give ourselves opportunities. But at some point, we’re gonna have to learn to get over the hump,” Hagerty coach Steve Mickel said.

Oviedo’s Samari Chisolm and Steven Malone had interceptions, as did Hagerty’s Trevor Covelli. Hagerty had three sacks, two by Gavin Miller, and the others by Ryan Davis and Isaac Flowers.

No. 8 DeLand 28, Mainland 20: Sophomore running back Taihj Moore scored three touchdowns and ran for 150 yards to lead the Bulldogs, now 6-0. Moore, who’s first score was a 63-yard run, also threw a short TD pass to Christian Baez. It was the first time DeLand has beaten Mainland since 2019.

The DeLand defense, which has had a tough time stopping opponents at times, giving up 24 points a game, rose up. The Bulldogs had a pair of fourth-quarter stops in the red zone to thwart Mainland’s attempts at tying the game.

No. 16 Lake Brantley 43, Tohopekaliga 7: Sophomore quarterback Jackson Stecher threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns and senior running back CJ Dewberry ran for more than 100 yards and three touchdowns for Brantley (5-1).

Melbourne 49, Winter Springs 20: Sophomore Jaylen Bowman picked off his state-leading ninth interception of the season, but Winter Springs (5-2) could not muster enough offense to keep up. Melbourne had a pair of long TDs to pull away late.

Baltimore (Md.) Saint Frances 37, No. 4 The First Academy 0: The Royals (4-3) are among Florida’s most talented teams, but they were overwhelmed by the national No. 2 Panthers (5-1) on the road. Saint Frances’ only loss was to national No. 1 St. John Bosco of California. TFA has lost to three nationally-ranked teams.
