A courageous grand jury acts wisely | Letters to the editor

I read with interest that a grand jury in Washington, D.C. refused to indict six members of Congress who appeared on video to remind members of our armed forces that they should not obey illegal and/or unconstitutional orders from their commanding officers or the Trump administration.

The grand jurors stood up for their country when they said no to the U.S. attorney who presented this “case.”

It seems that the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington forgot to answer for themselves the first question a prosecutor faces — namely, has a crime been committed? — before trying to prosecute anyone.

The likelihood of conviction might have been close to zero, too, which should have raised further concerns. It seems that slowly but gradually, we as a nation are waking up to the dangers Trump and his ethics-challenged aides are creating with their ruthless, unlawful acts.

Spreading love, not hate

Before the Super Bowl, I didn’t know much about Bad Bunny and his music. I wasn’t even sure I’d be watching at halftime. But I am immensely glad that I did!

In a short time, he captured the spirit and values of Hispanic culture, a dominant part of the American experience: the music, the joy, the sense of community and the respect for its traditions and institutions.

His message was love over hate. Who could possibly be offended? We can start with Donald Trump, who said on Truth Social that it was “a slap in the face to our country” and “an affront to the Greatness of America.”

What Trump, MAGA and conservative pundits don’t understand is, this is what makes America great! Their misunderstanding of the values of American multiculturalism, and specifically the contributions of Hispanic culture, will be a major contributor to the demise of the current regime.

State spending and inflation

In your recent editorial, “Stop DeSantis from spending too much money,” you stated the need to restrict Gov. Ron DeSantis’ lavish spending. As you noted, the first budget he signed in 2019 was for $91 billion. His proposed budget next year is $117 billion — an increase of 26% in seven years.

Economists at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (data.bls.gov) tell us that due to inflation, $91 billion in January 2019 is equivalent to about $117.5 billion as of December 2025, the most recent date available.

What is appalling is that the proposed budget increase of 26% over these seven years is in reality only keeping spending absolutely level, when compensating for inflation.

And this is despite Florida’s population growth with a likely commensurate increase in need for government services. Thank goodness that the inflation rate for calendar year 2025 was only 2.7%. Hopefully, this number will set a new inflation trend.

Perhaps the amount of the governor’s proposed budget increase for this year is not so lavish after all!

Leave PBIA alone

Renaming Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA) after Donald Trump, at great expense, is unnecessary and ill-advised.

Palm Beach already carries a prestigious reputation. It stands on its own without the need for association with any president — including Trump. Regardless of personal feelings toward him, spending public funds on such a change does not make sense.

Moreover, Trump’s name has been added to the Kennedy Center and part of Southern Boulevard, showing a pattern that seems more about personal branding than genuine community benefit.

The airport’s current name is widely recognized and respected, and altering it would only create confusion while diminishing the local identity.

It’s important to preserve the integrity and tradition of Palm Beach, rather than imposing costly and controversial rebranding efforts.
