Crown Point is a high-scoring team, but senior goalkeeper Sam Quick’s teammates understand how she makes that possible.
Senior midfielder Addy Sabau, who recorded a hat trick during the Bulldogs’ win against Lake Central in the Class 3A Munster Sectional championship game last week, is quick to credit Quick as the catalyst for that success.
“It makes me really confident when attacking,” Sabau said. “Knowing we have a strong defense, and especially a strong goalie behind us, lets me play calm. I know I can make mistakes because there are people behind me who will clean them up.”
Quick has been backing up teammates for three seasons. Crown Point (16-2), which will play Duneland Athletic Conference rival Chesterton at home in a regional semifinal at 6 p.m. Thursday, has won three conference titles and three sectional titles during her varsity career. In fact, the Bulldogs haven’t lost a single conference game in that time.
Quick continued to shine during the sectional last week, posting back-to-back shutouts with 10 total saves in Crown Point’s pair of 5-0 wins against Munster and Lake Central.
In 16 games this season, she has allowed just 10 goals and has recorded 61 saves while posting seven shutouts.

Crown Point coach Dave Bock said Quick’s success is the result of hard work.
“She’s really strong in the air,” Bock said. “She doesn’t drop the ball. If a shot comes in, there’s never a rebound. She’s great at reading when to come out and get the ball, and she makes all the saves you expect her to make while keeping everyone in line on defense.”
Quick can make people laugh too.
“She always laughed at how our assistant coach and I interacted after a goal,” Bock said. “One day when she was a sophomore, we pulled her from the game because we were ahead, and she started imitating him on the bench. After that, every day in the hallway for the rest of her sophomore year, she’d high-five me the same way she saw him do it.
“We have a lot of personalities on this team, but hers is definitely one of the strongest.”
One of Quick’s lesser-known talents is line dancing, an interest Sabau noted about her.
“I’ve been going for over a year now,” Quick said. “A friend brought me once, and we just kept going. We got better at it, and now I know all the dances. I love the environment there because I love the music and being with friends.”
Quick said line dancing is good for conditioning and even complements her role as a goalkeeper.
“Line dancing revolves around your feet,” she said. “You shuffle and cross over your legs a lot, just like I do in goal.”

Quick will be back in goal Thursday. She has high expectations for the Bulldogs, who have won five straight sectional titles but have never won a semistate title. They last won a regional title in 2023.
“My goal is the same as the rest of the team,” Quick said. “I want to make it past the semis at state. I’d love to get more shutouts to end my career, of course, but I really just want to put together good games and help my team win.”
Quick considered her legacy at Crown Point.
“Even if our season ends with a loss, I just hope that game is high effort,” she said. “That’s how I want to be remembered — as someone who always gave her best and competed until the end.”
Then she turned her focus back to the present.
“The job’s not finished,” she said.
