A man was deported after child sex assault conviction in CT. He got prison for re-entering U.S.

A man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for illegally re-entering the country after being deported following a sexual assault conviction involving a child more than a decade ago.

Roberto Muy, 35, a citizen of Ecuador who has been living in Torrington, faced sentencing on Thursday in federal court in Hartford, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.

He pleaded guilty in August to illegal re-entry, officials said.

According to authorities, Muy was admitted to the U.S. using a fraudulent visitor visa under the alias of a Peruvian citizen in February 2006.  In June 2012, he appeared in Superior Court in Torrington where he was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a minor and sentenced to 10 years in prison, suspended after service of 15 months, and 25 years of probation.

Officials said Muy was removed to Ecuador in June 2013.

Federal authorities said Muy illegally re-entered the country and was arrested by the Torrington Police Department on Nov. 9, 2024, and charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

On March 18, he was sentenced in state court to two years in prison for violating his probation in the sexual assault case and two additional days behind bars for the motor vehicle case, officials said. He has been in custody since.
