Admirals finish trip with defeat, have lost 6 of last 7

The Norfolk Admirals, perhaps weary with their fourth road game in five days, lost 5-1 Sunday to the Maine Mariners before 5,765 at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

Maine goalie Luke Cavallin made 40 saves for the victory and the No. 1 star award.

The Admirals (5-8-2-0) completed a 1-3 trip, have lost six of their last seven games and likely will be thrilled to be back at Scope for 7:05 p.m. games Friday and Saturday against the Mariners (8-4-2-1).

Maine, the ECHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins, had gone its last four games without a triumph.

Goalie Logan Stein, a 24-year-old Georgia native who played four years for Ferris State and last season for Michigan, made his Admirals debut with 22 saves but took the loss. Norfolk recently acquired him from the Atlanta Gladiators.

Owen Gallatin’s goal put Maine ahead 5:56 into the game. Lynden McCallum made it 2-0 on a two-on-one break less than two minutes later.

In the second period, the Admirals’ Marko Reifenberger scored on a backhander at 8:24 off assists from David Jankowski and Jace Isley. But the Mariners’ Jacob Hudson responded at 14:34, and Tristan Thompson’s goal at 19:27 put the hosts ahead 4-1 at the second intermission.

Brooklyn Kalmikov’s goal at 3:38 of the third completed the scoring.
