Admirals lose in OT as Wheeling rallies to sweep 2-game series

The Norfolk Admirals got a point — albeit an unsatisfying one — in the standings by reaching overtime in a 3-2 loss Sunday to Wheeling. The Nailers delighted most of the 1,734 fans at WesBanco Arena in West Virginia by erasing a two-goal deficit to sweep a two-game ECHL series.

Admirals goalie Alex Worthington made 34 saves but took the loss. Wheeling’s Maxim Pavlenko made 33 saves for his second victory in two nights.

Norfolk (2-2-2-0) went ahead 2-0 on Connor Fedorek’s slap shot from the point 5:05 into the game and Brady Fleurent’s back-door tap-in at 7:11, finishing a crisp passing play from Jaydon Dureau and Brandon Osmundson.

Ryan Mahshie’s goal 9:44 into the first period and Connor Lockhart’s power-play goal 12:35 into the second period evened the score at 2.

After a scoreless third period, Max Graham netted the winning goal 2:25 into OT for Wheeling (4-1-0-0).

Before the series, the teams made a trade Friday. Norfolk acquired the rights to forward David Jankowski from Wheeling in exchange for defenseman Eric Parker. Jankowski, 28, had 80 points in 146 games over three seasons with the Nailers, but he didn’t play in the weekend series. Parker took three shots for Wheeling in Sunday’s clash.

The Admirals will be back at Scope for a five-game homestand starting at 7:05 p.m. Friday against the Adirondack Thunder.
