As the ECHL returns to normal after a brief strike by players, Wednesday’s result as Norfolk played its first game after the stoppage was all too normal: a loss.
The Admirals finished 2025 with a 2-1 loss to the Reading Royals before 3,454 at Santander Arena in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Norfolk will be back at Scope for games Friday and Saturday, both at 7 p.m., against the Royals. It will be the first home games since Dec. 12 for the Admirals (7-19-2-0), who are looking to escape the cellar of the 30-team league.
Goalie Yaniv Perets, a former Admiral, made 27 saves for the victory for Reading (16-11-2-0), an affiliate of the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers. Norfolk’s Isaac Poulter stopped 23 shots but took the defeat.
In a game with just five penalties, all minors, Nolan Burke put the Royals ahead with a wrist shot 40 seconds into the second period. Alec Butcher doubled the lead with a breakaway 16:12 into the middle period on the day’s second assist from Ben Meehan, who was named the game’s No. 1 star.
German Yavas pulled the Admirals to 2-1 with a redirection, getting assists from Carson Musser and Justin Young, but Norfolk couldn’t catch up despite removing Poulter for an extra attacker with about 1:43 remaining.
Last weekend, dozens of games, including three pitting the Admirals at Greensboro, were postponed because of the strike.
But Tuesday, the Professional Hockey Players’ Association announced that its ECHL membership ratified a new, five-year collective bargaining agreement with the league that runs through the 2029-30 season.
