Admirals’ slump continues with 2-game sweep by Maine at Scope

Try as they might, the Norfolk Admirals have hit a slump.

Saturday night’s 4-1 loss to Maine before 4,038 at Scope was their eighth in the last nine ECHL games.

After two consecutive years of reaching the playoffs, they’re 5-10-2-0 and at the bottom of the eight-team North Division.
The Mariners completed a two-game sweep of Norfolk after beating them once last weekend in Portland.

Some frustration perhaps showed for the Admirals, who were whistled for 12 infractions spanning 51 penalty minutes, compared to Maine’s eight penalties for 19 minutes. None of the Mariners’ goals came on their five power-play chances, though.

Xander Lamppa put Maine (10-4-2-1) ahead 5:23 into the second period, and Caden Villegas extended the lead to 2-0 at 7:19. Jacob Hudson gave the Mariners a 3-0 edge at 18:26 after two periods, during which Maine outshot the Admirals 29-11.

Norfolk put plenty of pucks on Maine goalie Brad Arvanitis in the final 20 minutes, outshooting the Mariners 15-9, but only Jaydon Dureau — off assists from Ben Zloty and Kevin Conley — got one into the net. That made it 3-1 with 4:33 remaining.

Admirals coach Jeff Carr soon pulled goalie Alex Worthington, but Jaxon Bellamy ended Norfolk’s hopes with an empty-net goal with 1:27 remaining.

The Admirals will try to regroup before hosting the Florida Everblades in a three-game series from Friday through next Sunday.
