NORFOLK — Wards Corner has hit the shopping bullseye.
After years of hints and speculation, Norfolk officials confirmed a Target is headed to the former Kroger site at 201 E. Little Creek Road in a Tuesday social media post.
“Circle up, Norfolk, because yes, it’s true!” the announcement reads, which featured Target’s recognizable red bullseye logo. The post teases a new shopping experience and promises new details soon.
Norfolk city spokesperson Kelly Straub confirmed that a Target was headed to the location in a text message. Target spokesperson Loni Monroe also confirmed the news in an email, saying the store would be about 129,000 square feet.
“As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share — including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date,” Monroe said.
For years, city officials and documents have hinted at a Target location for a new store despite official confirmation from the company. In 2023, Norfolk civic league members said city officials told them a deal was in the works between Target and local developer Kotarides Cos.
Planning documents submitted later in 2023 showed a proposal for a “large, high-quality retail store,” and Norfolk City Council approved the then-undisclosed retailer in April 2023.
The former Kroger building was also recently demolished.
The nearest Target location is on North Military Highway, about 5 miles away.
