The annual Yorktown Day Parade slated for this weekend has been canceled due to the ongoing shutdown of the federal government, the event’s organizers announced Tuesday.
Yorkdown Day celebrates the United States’ 1781 victory there that effectively ended the Revolutionary War. The town holds artillery salutes, interpretive programs and other events.
Typically, the parade and other patriotic exercises, which are administered by the Colonial National Historical Park Yorktown Battlefield, are held on Main Street and at the Yorktown Victory Monument. Instead, the Yorktown Day Association will hold a ceremony on Oct. 19 at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown at 200 Water St.
The events of the weekend will include wreath-laying ceremonies at other locations in Historic Yorktown to honor soldiers who fought in the war, Victory Market on Saturday at Riverwalk Landing located at 331 Water St. from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., a special exhibition on the Revolutionary War and a talk by Sean Heuvel, the author of “Virginia Militia Commanders at Yorktown.”

The federal government has been shut down since Oct. 1, meaning federal workers are either working without pay or not working at all. In 2018, the federal government was shut down for 35 days.
